The data scientist provides data-driven conclusions and proposals that can be used for decision making and problem solving in complex situations.  The goal of this process is to provide impactful business insights that would not otherwise be available to decision makers. 

 

Essential Duties:  

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to collect, analyze, and interpret large amounts of data on business processes or activities. 
  • Design and develop statistical models that can be used to test hypotheses and predict outcomes. 
  • Identify patterns and trends in the manufacturing process before they become obvious. 
  • Present the results of analyses to stakeholders, identify potential solutions, and make actionable recommendations for optimization and/or remediation of substandard results. 
  • Identify technological patterns and trends that impact the business before the they become common knowledge among industry insiders.
  • Support the company’s push to become a data-driven organization by maintaining a large data pipeline and network for data collection. 

 

 

Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline is required for this position; a master’s or doctoral degree is a strong plus.  Relevant fields of study include computer science, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • At least two years of experience designing data models and performing statistical and/or quantitative analyses to support business decision making are required. A doctoral degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.   
  • Experience in manufacturing, particularly specialty chemicals or oil and gas is a strong plus.
  • The ability to conduct primary research and design experiments using a rigorous scientific approach is essential.   
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are indispensable, including the ability to explain findings and recommendations to non-technical personnel.   
  • Advanced skills in at least one popular predictive analytics software tool are necessary for success in this role.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI is an advantage.
