Operations Excellence Engineer

Drive operational excellence across Orion’s global network of plants.




  • Drive improvements in quality variability and operation efficiency across all plants.
    • Understand how to link process variability to quality variability
    • Familiar with methodologies to reduce process variation
    • Drive better compliance with the company’s technical standards.
    • Work with reliability to resolve persistent reliability issues.
    • Identify improvement opportunities in our network of plants
    • Justify projects through data analysis and comparison of different plants etc.
    • Consult with Innovation when needed to solve new technical problems
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on plant equipment and quality problems.  Work with plant personnel to create ranked solution options.
  • Provide Engineering guidance for all areas of the plant.
  • Support trials of new equipment and commercial production of new grades
  • Manage and support process improvement projects in our plants with specific focus on yield improvement, improved capability, quality and throughput.
  • Coach and train plant personnel in continuous improvement, RCA, process technology
  • Identify production processes suitable for automation, develop path forward with IT support and drive implementation


  • 3 - 5 years minimum, Chemical Plant experience in a process engineer role. 
  • Familiarity with process data historians (e.g., OSI PI) and DCS beneficial
  • The ability to understand complex technical processes.
  • Understanding of multiple Root Cause Analysis techniques (e.g. 5 whys, Cause Mapping, FMEA, Kepner Tregoe, Apollo, 8D)
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and push for results without damaging relationships.
  • Excellent communication, organization, management and leadership skills.
  • The ability to manage others through influence rather than lines of control
  • Effective problem-solving skills, to complex and often unanticipated issues.
  • Persistence in finding the best solutions rather than accepting the first option that comes up.
  • Knowledge of various electrical and mechanical equipment and unit operations.
  • B.S. Chemical Engineering required or similar Engineering qualification with experience in continuous chemicals production.  Masters or other advanced qualifications is a plus.
  • Capable of using computers in all aspects of “Principal Accountabilities” (Microsoft office suite)
  • Self-starter able to work independently and travel to plants up to 50% of the time.
