Process Safety and Responsible Care Specialist

The Process Safety & Responsible Care Specialist is responsible for driving excellence in process safety and Responsible Care performance across North American manufacturing sites. This role leads and supports Responsible Care initiatives, ISO 14001/9001 certification processes, and process safety initiatives, working closely with site EHS managers, technical teams, and plant personnel. The Specialist provides technical expertise, facilitates risk assessments, and ensures compliance with internal and external standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible Care & ISO Management

- Lead and coordinate Responsible Care (RC 14001) certification efforts for manufacturing sites and maintain compliance for certified sites.

- Develop and maintain EHSS and process safety procedures and standards required for ACC membership and ISO certification.

- Develop systems to maintain compliance with legal environmental requirements applicable to all sites in Americas Region.

- Conduct internal audits of environmental, process safety and security systems; identify gaps and implement corrective actions.

- Serve as the primary liaison with third-party auditors for ISO and Responsible Care certifications.

- Support sustainability reporting and initiatives in collaboration with regional managers.

Process Safety Engineering

- Lead, facilitate, conduct, and document Process Hazard Analyses (PHA, HAZOP, LOPA), ensuring risk-reduction strategies are applied.

- Support plant compliance with Orion’s Process Safety Initiatives, and local/state regulations.

- Review projects, changes, and activities to ensure process safety issues are identified and addressed through Management of Change (MOC) process.

- Support process safety incident investigations and ensure root causes are addressed.

- Provide technical expertise for insurance audits and recommendations in the process safety field.

- Help assigned plants implement the Process Safety Initiatives aspects of Orion’s management system.

- Provide technical assistance and training to site management and staff in process safety initiatives.

- Participate in internal regulatory compliance audits.

Stakeholder Engagement

- Establish and maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with key internal stakeholders.

- Interact with operations personnel to define and solve process safety/design issues.

- Actively participate in industry organizations (e.g., ACC) and represent the company in Responsible Care and process safety initiatives.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (chemical or mechanical preferred; other disciplines considered).

- 3–5 years’ experience in process safety engineering or related technical field.

- 5+ years Environmental Health and Safety experience in an industrial setting, specifically in process safety and/or OSHA PSM.

- Experience managing ISO 14001/9001 certification initiatives.

- Thorough understanding of Responsible Care voluntary improvement initiative.

- Experience with process safety systems (OSHA PSM, hazard analysis, risk assessment).

- Familiarity with Title V permitting, Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), NPDES permitting, Carbon Black MACT, GHG reporting, and other US environmental requirements.

- Knowledge of PHA and LOPA analysis, incident investigation techniques.

- Strong interpersonal skills, able to influence and motivate others.

- Ability to work in a diverse team environment and interact with personnel at all levels.

- Ability to obtain TWIC Card.

- General knowledge of ISO Standards & Responsible Care.
